We welcomed the arrival turn of this new year on our knees last night. Being in church at the stroke of midnight in thanks, praise, and hopefulness is a powerful action. It's always good to be surrounded by like minded people who love the Lord, and each other. I'm blessed to have a church community that is not too big, and not too small-it's just right.

When we got home, champagne was waiting.

Now, on to dinner! Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas and rice), stewed tomatoes, collard greens, potato salad, golden fried pork chops, and cornbread is on my menu today. Hope you are enjoying a good meal (no more fried foods after today) surrounded by those you love.

I'm not sure who originally wrote this article, but if anyone knows of that person please let me know so I can give them credit for their work. Someone emailed it to me and I felt the need to share it with my readers as is (typos and all). It's a pretty long read but it's definitely worth it.

When I first heard of the movie "For Colored Girls" I got so excited. I had the idea of getting as many women together that I could think of to go see this movie. I had visions of group discussions and moments shared with one another that would lead to healing and growth, I guess I kind of imagined a Women's Empowerment Conference type of setting.

Well after I shared my idea with a few women, reality set in and I realized that so many of us wouldn't be willing to participate for various reasons: You don't like me, you don't care for somebody I might invite, you only hang out with certain people, you don't understand the big deal about Tyler Perry making yet another movie about black people and our issues for all the world to see, you don't like crowds, so and so is too ghetto, such and such is too uppity etc...

It has ALWAYS amazed me that we as black women are each other's biggest critics. We are the quickest to bring each other down, find each other's faults and nitpick at a sister until she has nothing left, nothing left to give and then we step over her and call her worthless.

We take the prettiest women and tear them down for thinking "they are cute" but turn around and dog the average sista because " she know she should take better care of herself than that - can't believe she got a man!" We call strong women female dogs and accuse weaker women of riding somebody else's coat tails.

We tell a big sista to put down her burger and turn around and criticize a skinny woman for not picking one up. We ride the loud mouth woman for "talking to darn much" and likewise torment the quiet woman for "Being too quiet and needing to take up for herself" Sad part is we don't discriminate, we talk about everybody!!!

I've watched women dog out everybody from Oprah for catering to white people and Halle Berry for not being able to keep a man to young Willow Smith for acting to darn grown in her recent video. All of these females are successful and there is something about each one of them to be proud of but a lot of us can't seem to see that. I have to wonder since we all share a common thread (whether we want to admit it or not) is there something about ourselves that we don't like, what has happened to us that we cannot seem to get along.

Why is that we fight amongst ourselves, backstab and steal each others men (only to find out we should have left him where we found him)?

We cannot seem to be unified to support and stick up for one another. Everybody seems to be out for themselves while other groups unite against us but nobody else has to bring us down because we trample on the spirits of each other daily.

Even if you live in a mini mansion, drive a luxury car, have good credit, rich handsome husband etc, this does not mean that should look down your nose at the woman with 4 kids, no husband, living in income based housing struggling to keep her lights on.

We ALWAYS think the grass is greener on the other side, I had a woman who's child father is MIA tell me that I should never complain because I receive a decent amount of child support and I laughed and let her know that I would gladly give every dime back if he would come relieve some of this overwhelming pressure of feeling inadequate as a parent.

If I could get just one full night of sleep or not always be on the verge of losing my job because I'm the one that has to call off or leave work for one reason or another to accommodate my child - yeah he could DEFINITELY have his money if I could have some peace!

Money alone doesn't make you happy (not true happiness), good credit doesn't keep you satisfied, beauty doesn't make you any less insecure, fame doesn't make you less vulnerable or cause you to be a good judge of character and being stuck up and mean doesn't keep you warm at night or prevent you from being lonely.

You don't know how the sista sitting right next to could have carefully put on her make up this morning to hide the beating from last night. The teacher you handed your child over to this morning could have sent her children off to school from a dark house with empty bellies. The teller you just got rude with at the bank could know that today is her last day on her job and have no idea how she is going to survive past next weekend.

The sista at the office that appears so busy could be typing her goodbyes to all the people that she loves because she plans to blow her brains out tonight after she tucks her babies into bed. The woman you pass in the hallway could be on her way to have an abortion because she fears what others might think or how the woman that sent you this e-mail may drink an over abundance of alcohol every night to mask the nightmares of an abusive childhood.

Ladies we HAVE TO DO BETTER! I'm not suggesting that we all like each other and be phony, but I am asking that we all try to respect each other. You HAVE NO IDEA what the next woman is going through, you don't know what past or current hurt and pains have shaped her into who she is today. We spend so much time trying to be as strong and hard as we are expected to be that we end up cracking from the inside out piece by piece.

If we would spend 1/3 of the time we spend tearing each other down to build someone up, encourage someone, show someone some love, we could truly make a difference and save someone's life. PLEASE don't be the straw that breaks another woman's back. Believe me when I tell you that there is a woman out there that needs your smile, your hug, your support, your prayer.

I hope that you read this and get something out of it other than a laugh and that you pass this on to as many women as you can to let someone know that you believe they are somebody special and that if need be you are available to listen. Nothing bad is going to happen if you don't forward this e-mail but I'd like to think that something positive will happen if you choose to pass it along. May favor be extended to each and everyone of your lives, keep your head up and know that someone somewhere cares!

It seems as though we are moving backwards regarding race relations, and living in a civil society. We are not free. On the contrary I think that we are in bondage more than ever. How could one even consider entertaining a rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the 47th Anniversary of Dr. King's most famous speech unless the topic is about loving each other? What's going on today is all about hate mongering and just plain mean spirited. It's a slap in the face. It's.........I have no words to convey the anger and sadness I feel right now. As a country we need to be free from this foolishness. When those at the rally today are spewing venom, pray. It changes everything and is your strongest weapon against hate.

I believe that nothing should be about race, but about God's children loving each other the way we love ourselves. Period. That would take care of every single problem in this world. Dare to believe that it's that simple.

WTF is going on? This is not the dream we signed up for. Today, I am going to tune out all of the noise, and I ask that you do too. If you want to know what should be going on today in DC-remind yourself below.

Front row seats-Jackson Victory Tour!!

Zen and I were having such a great time at the show. We were hollering and screaming like little girls. I firmly believe that you always have the most fun when you don't give a damn. We didn't give a damn. At one point I made eye contact with Randy Jackson (who cares it was Randy-right), and we were having this intense stare down while he was performing. For some reason I didn't feel that connection anymore and I followed his eyes that had moved ever so slightly. I'll be damned if Zen wasn't having stare sex with him too! We never laughed so hard in our lives. And yes I know this is a picture of Marlon with Mike-work with me ok?

Anyway they were performing as the Jackson 5 and although were loving it-it was time for Mike solo. He didn't disappoint. Michael Jackson is the ultimate show-man. As he performed Billie Jean, there was anticipation for his signature choreography and then all of a sudden......Michael REALLY made eye contact with me, and the next thing I know...

The Billie Jean hat went right into my hands!

The Black Fedora came from Hats in the Belfry in Georgetown.
The white silk lining was wet with Michael Jackson's sweat and Jerri Curl juice.
I put it on my head for a split second so my head could be where his was and then protected it like a newborn until I got it home.
Sigh. I love Michael Jackson.
He was my wallpaper growing up and he entertained me his entire life.
I can't believe he's gone-much less gone a year.

Anyway, the year is 1984 and I was listening to the six o'clock news. Renee Poussaint (a DC news anchor) was reading the evening's headlines and top of the list was that tickets for the Jacksons Victory Tour were going on sale the next morning. Up until that point, news of the concert didn't phase me, but for some reason, I felt a big pull to try to get tickets. I called my girl ZEN to see if she wanted to camp out in front of RFK Stadium in DC to get tickets. She couldn't make it, but that didn't stop me. I grabbed a lawn chair and hopped in the car. I was anxious the entire ride down thinking that I would be in a long line that had already formed.

I was totally alone at RFK Stadium! As the evening wore on, people started coming with food, blankets, and music. We all looked out for each other for bathroom breaks and the like, but we all knew the coveted prize was going to me! First in line-front row seats! And to make it even sweeter, each person was limited to 10 tickets apiece and I only needed 4. I sold my right to buy for $100, so I made $600 that night. When the box office opened up the next morning, the television cameras were there and filmed me buying the very first tickets for the Jackson Victory Tour. I recorded the news later in the day, and I still have the tape somewhere (granted it's on a Beta tape). Look it up youngin's if you don't know what a Betamax is, or should I say-was.

My children and I were in the car one day listening to the local R&B station. Luther had just gone off the air and Usher followed him. My husband's daughter was a young teen at the time and the younger kids were teasing her about crushing on Usher. As we were laughing, the kids asked me who I was crushing on "back then". Thinking it a slam dunk, I told them to guess. They wanted to know if it was Luther. I laughed and realized it might be a little harder for them than I thought. Well after a while, they gave up and I told them it was Michael Jackson.

*crickets*

They looked at me as if I had two heads.

Took me a minute to realize that their images of Mike were something like this:

They didn't know that no matter what, I would always see him as this:

From that moment on, I made it my mission to make sure that they were educated on Mike the master-entertainer-singer-dancer-genius.

When news of his death broke, it was my children who gently woke me up from a nap, and told me to watch TV.

I overheard them later tell friends who called, that I wasn't taking any calls and they would relay condolences.

Gotta love them for that.

** FOOTNOTE
The kids read the post yesterday and reminded me I forgot the best part of the story. You see, after they looked at me like a two headed monster, they burst out laughing and saying stuff like UGHHH, GROSS, and YUCK. I told them there was absolutely nothing funny about my love for Mike, and they needed to be quiet because he could've been their daddy! I was serious.

Originally saw this at The Savvy Sista and knew it was worth repeating. As a matter of fact, this article should probably be re-blogged, re-tweeted, and re-whatever else you do nowadays. I firmly believe that proper parenting (or lack of it) is a HUGE part of our social problems today. I had a tremendous childhood and every child should be able to have the same. Read on:

Commentary: Lamenting the Death of Childhood

I have a serious gripe about the childhood experience in the new millennium.

It's absolutely and completely devoid of innocence. In fact, the concept of innocence as a basic right of childhood has disappeared. Whatever happened to the good ol' days when children were allowed to be children? They wore children's clothes. Played children's games. Talked about things children should talk about. And worried about things only children should worry about, like, How am I going to clean my room quick enough to go outside and play? Or, Will Johnny play with me when I get outside? Or, How fast do I have to pedal this bike to make it home before the streetlights come on?

Does anybody else remember these glory days?

Instead, today most parents are dressing their children like mini-adults, in smaller versions of the trashy stuff adults wear. I see little girls in miniskirts, tight jeans, high-heeled shoes and wearing training bras before they have anything to train. I see 4-year-old boys with pierced ears and diamond studs -- sometimes two. Everybody is in a rush for children to grow up.

On any given day in the parenting blogosphere, you'll find someone, somewhere asking if 10 years old is too young to start waxing legs, or some other mommy-angst over eyebrow- or lip-waxing for 8-year-olds. If a child is being teased because of excessive hair growth, then I may understand a parent giving it some consideration (depending on the child's age), but this excessive attention on grooming at such an early age is dangerous. It increases a child's self-consciousness rather than their self-confidence, as far as I'm concerned.

Meanwhile, our conversations, popular music and clothing have oversexualized our children and introduced them to "grown folk" concepts long before they are ready. Then we wonder why 14-year-olds are raping 7-year-olds, and what this world is coming to. My 10- and 6-year-olds barely watch any TV as it is, but when Disney Channel's Hannah Montana started kissing boys and Zack and Cody started "dating," I quickly cut those shows out of the approved rotation.

What's more, when I was growing up, if I wanted to know anything about "grown folks'" conversations, I would have to sneak. And hard. I would have to stay up past my bedtime, sneak down the steps (trying to avoid the creaky spots), squeeze my head in between the banister rails and listen really, really hard. It took serious work and planning in order to hear an adult conversation.

Today, things are just the opposite. Children are in the middle of divorce squabbles, money problems and babymama/babydaddy drama, and they use words they really shouldn't know. Parents don't work to protect a child's right to be innocent. And this is a problem.

When my son was in pre-K at a local Montessori school, a well-respected teacher that I generally admired would make constant joking references to my son's so-called "girlfriend." "Is that your 'girlfriend?' Say goodbye to your 'girlfriend,'" she would say. She thought it was so cute. I took her aside after the third time and let her know that I didn't think it was appropriate to introduce adult concepts like "boyfriends and girlfriends" to a 3-year-old. I told her that we don't use those words in our house, and that I would appreciate it if she would refrain from those types of jokes.

She looked at me like I was from another planet. And I am: the old-school planet. I'm all about preserving a child's right to be a child. My children have never watched BET videos, and they listen to my pre-made kid CDs in the car. Unfortunately, that has made my children misfits in the world, especially when they often don't know the songs, dance moves or popular video games (but they're highly advanced readers, and writing and math whizzes).

When we get children worrying about what's on the outside -- instead of what's on the inside -- at such an early age, we set a dangerous precedent and send a damaging message about what really matters. When parenting young girls and boys, we need to get our focus back on character and not on clothes, personal power or pedicures; on self-worth instead of waxing. And then we will see how truly beautiful our children really are.

My sister "let me have" Michael because we were closer in age and she "took" Jermaine because he was older and she thought he was finer. We loved it all, the moves, the fashions, the afros, the smiles-I mean I Want You Back first came out on 45 and we loved the flip side just as much as the original single. How cool was it that such a young boy sing so knowingly about the pain of love? It was called Who's Lovin You and it remains one of my favorites.

Happy Birthday to my dearest friend, ZEN. I'm doing this in a big way because I have forgotten her birthday damn near every year since we've known each other (26 years) and I always promise to do something to help me remember, and here it is-a blog entry. Isn't she gorgeous? (She just screamed by the way).

She is a fiercely loyal "front" (sorority speak), a wonderful wife, mother, sister, etc... ZEN has a wicked sense of humor (key to staying young and young at heart), and she takes enormously good care of those she loves.

She's been around through thick and thin, marriage/divorce, and marriage again, babies, trials, tribulations, and triumphs. ZEN is so much fun to be around-her laughter is contagious and she's just plain cool. This southern belle is ever the lady (i'm the catty one). We've grown up together and I can say she is one of the best friends a girl could ask for and i'm honored she's my friend and i'm her "back".

I haven't told anyone about this blog except her. I figured if someone found my ramblings, then cool. ZEN "got it", she knew why I needed to do this, and she's been nothing but encouraging and supportive. Little did she know she ran the risk of being put on blast like this.

Why do I call her ZEN? She is a certified yoga instructor and I mean-she's been all through India and sh*t doing her Namaste thing, gone into the hills to meditate and such, but when she came down...she got her certification, and she's the best there is! People swear by her. BTW-the yoga thing is her ACT II and i'm proud she found it. I can put you in touch if you're looking for the best.

And finally......she still rocks a bikini and looks damn good doing it!!!

If you see her today-wish her a Happy Birthday and tell her she is loved.

Corrine Bailey Rae performing Closer reminds me of:

Minnie Ripperton.
She died one month after this performance in July 1979 (below) from breast cancer.
Cut for cut-her last album, Minnie, was incredible and the cover was beautiful.
It didn't quite sink in with me that you COULD really die young until Minnie passed away.
She was 31.

Anyway, when I mentioned that I could hear Minnie in Corrine to C.T.-my go to guy for all musical insight, he sent me this and it confirmed how good my ear really is (smile)-Minnie was an influence. Enjoy her.

I had the most wonderful margarita over the weekend. I'm not a margarita drinker, but this was an incredible cocktail. I also liked that it was a margarita for grown folks-not all blender-ed up and rimmed in sugar, salt, or sugary salt. I questioned the bartender, did a bit of research, learned a little something, and got quite tipsy in the process.

Use a tequila that's 100% agave. What does that mean? Dictionary.com:

The bartender used the recipe borrowed from Gaston Martinez, a "brand ambassador" for Milagro Tequila. I've reprinted his recipe below for the "World's Freshest Margarita":

Always use fresh lime juice.
Use agave nectar as your sweetener.
Water is a key ingredient in a good margarita-shake well so some of the ice will melt.
Always pour your margarita over fresh ice.

2oz tequila (Gaston suggests Milagro Silver tequila)
1 oz Agave Nectar (Milagro also makes this)
1 oz Lime Juice
Served in a Rocks Glass

Mint Julep is the drink of the Kentucky Derby.
Cocktail Times says that the drink originated with the Derby in 1938 when it was served in souvenir glasses for 75 cents. The drink's name first appeared in print in 1803 when it was explained as a "dram of spirituous liquor that has mint in it, taken by Virginians in the morning." The story went that farmers drank a mint julep in the morning, like coffee, to get them going for the day. Historians also say that the drink's origin traces back to Arabia with a drink called the "julab" made of water and rose petals. The silver or pewter cup is part of the mint julep's tradition - these materials stay cold longer, and they are frosted before the icy drink is poured into them.

Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.

10:40 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Please be seated. Let me begin by saying a word to Dr. Dorothy Height’s sister, Ms. Aldridge. To some, she was a mentor. To all, she was a friend. But to you, she was family, and my family offers yours our sympathy for your loss.

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life, and mourn the passing, of Dr. Dorothy Height. It is fitting that we do so here, in our National Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Here, in a place of great honor. Here, in the House of God. Surrounded by the love of family and of friends. The love in this sanctuary is a testament to a life lived righteously; a life that lifted other lives; a life that changed this country for the better over the course of nearly one century here on Earth.

Michelle and I didn’t know Dr. Height as well, or as long, as many of you. We were reminded during a previous moment in the service, when you have a nephew who’s 88 -- (laughter) -- you’ve lived a full life. (Applause.)
But we did come to know her in the early days of my campaign. And we came to love her, as so many loved her. We came to love her stories. And we loved her smile. And we loved those hats -- (laughter) -- that she wore like a crown -- regal. In the White House, she was a regular. She came by not once, not twice -- 21 times she stopped by the White House. (Laughter and applause.) Took part in our discussions around health care reform in her final months.

Last February, I was scheduled to see her and other civil rights leaders to discuss the pressing problems of unemployment -- Reverend Sharpton, Ben Jealous of the NAACP, Marc Morial of the National Urban League. Then we discovered that Washington was about to be blanketed by the worst blizzard in record -- two feet of snow.
So I suggested to one of my aides, we should call Dr. Height and say we're happy to reschedule the meeting. Certainly if the others come, she should not feel obliged. True to form, Dr. Height insisted on coming, despite the blizzard, never mind that she was in a wheelchair. She was not about to let just a bunch of men -- (laughter) -- in this meeting. (Applause.) It was only when the car literally could not get to her driveway that she reluctantly decided to stay home. But she still sent a message -- (laughter) -- about what needed to be done.
And I tell that story partly because it brings a smile to my face, but also because it captures the quiet, dogged, dignified persistence that all of us who loved Dr. Height came to know so well -- an attribute that we understand she learned early on.

Born in the capital of the old Confederacy, brought north by her parents as part of that great migration, Dr. Height was raised in another age, in a different America, beyond the experience of many. It’s hard to imagine, I think, life in the first decades of that last century when the elderly woman that we knew was only a girl. Jim Crow ruled the South. The Klan was on the rise -- a powerful political force. Lynching was all too often the penalty for the offense of black skin. Slaves had been freed within living memory, but too often, their children, their grandchildren remained captive, because they were denied justice and denied equality, denied opportunity, denied a chance to pursue their dreams.
The progress that followed -- progress that so many of you helped to achieve, progress that ultimately made it possible for Michelle and me to be here as President and First Lady -- that progress came slowly. (Applause.)
Progress came from the collective effort of multiple generations of Americans. From preachers and lawyers, and thinkers and doers, men and women like Dr. Height, who took it upon themselves -- often at great risk -- to change this country for the better. From men like W.E.B Du Bois and A. Philip Randolph; women like Mary McLeod Bethune and Betty Friedan -- they’re Americans whose names we know. They are leaders whose legacies we teach. They are giants who fill our history books. Well, Dr. Dorothy Height deserves a place in this pantheon. She, too, deserves a place in our history books. (Applause.) She, too, deserves a place of honor in America’s memory.

Look at her body of work. Desegregating the YWCA. Laying the groundwork for integration on Wednesdays in Mississippi. Lending pigs to poor farmers as a sustainable source of income. Strategizing with civil rights leaders, holding her own, the only woman in the room, Queen Esther to this Moses Generation -- even as she led the National Council of Negro Women with vision and energy -- (applause) -- with vision and energy, vision and class.
But we remember her not solely for all she did during the civil rights movement. We remember her for all she did over a lifetime, behind the scenes, to broaden the movement’s reach. To shine a light on stable families and tight-knit communities. To make us see the drive for civil rights and women’s rights not as a separate struggle, but as part of a larger movement to secure the rights of all humanity, regardless of gender, regardless of race, regardless of ethnicity.

It’s an unambiguous record of righteous work, worthy of remembrance, worthy of recognition. And yet, one of the ironies is, is that year after year, decade in, decade out, Dr. Height went about her work quietly, without fanfare, without self-promotion. She never cared about who got the credit. She didn’t need to see her picture in the papers. She understood that the movement gathered strength from the bottom up, those unheralded men and women who don't always make it into the history books but who steadily insisted on their dignity, on their manhood and womanhood. (Applause.) She wasn’t interested in credit. What she cared about was the cause. The cause of justice. The cause of equality. The cause of opportunity. Freedom’s cause.

And that willingness to subsume herself, that humility and that grace, is why we honor Dr. Dorothy Height. As it is written in the Gospel of Matthew: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” I don’t think the author of the Gospel would mind me rephrasing: “whoever humbles herself will be exalted.” (Applause.)

One of my favorite moments with Dr. Height -- this was just a few months ago -- we had decided to put up the Emancipation Proclamation in the Oval Office, and we invited some elders to share reflections of the movement. And she came and it was a inter-generational event, so we had young children there, as well as elders, and the elders were asked to share stories. And she talked about attending a dinner in the 1940s at the home of Dr. Benjamin Mays, then president of Morehouse College. And seated at the table that evening was a 15-year-old student, “a gifted child,” as she described him, filled with a sense of purpose, who was trying to decide whether to enter medicine, or law, or the ministry.

And many years later, after that gifted child had become a gifted preacher -- I’m sure he had been told to be on his best behavior -- after he led a bus boycott in Montgomery, and inspired a nation with his dreams, he delivered a sermon on what he called “the drum major instinct” -- a sermon that said we all have the desire to be first, we all want to be at the front of the line.

The great test of a life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, is to harness that instinct; to redirect it towards advancing the greater good; toward changing a community and a country for the better; toward doing the Lord’s work.
I sometimes think Dr. King must have had Dorothy Height in mind when he gave that speech. For Dorothy Height met the test. Dorothy Height embodied that instinct. Dorothy Height was a drum major for justice. A drum major for equality. A drum major for freedom. A drum major for service. And the lesson she would want us to leave with today -- a lesson she lived out each and every day -- is that we can all be first in service. We can all be drum majors for a righteous cause. So let us live out that lesson. Let us honor her life by changing this country for the better as long as we are blessed to live. May God bless Dr. Dorothy Height and the union that she made more perfect. (Applause.)

I got a bit busy this week and didn't make mention of Earth Day, but I firmly beleive that we all have a responsibility for our "footprints", and need to do (within reason) whatever we can do to help preserve and save the planet for future generations. Penn Relays

I helped manage a wedding today while the family went to the Penn Relays. They brought me back a few pictures of what I missed. My Mini-Me (1) told me that Usain Bolt wasn't human-he's a machine. He ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 meter relay in 8.79 seconds...WOW! He got the baton 10 meters behind the others, and at 50 meters he was 10 meters ahead. I'm sorry I missed it! My husband is a Penn man, so he was able to fanangle his way on the field and get some up close shots of the Olympian with his teammates, the Mayor, and the Governor (also Penn Men). Enjoy!

I can't emphasize enough how critical this race is for the state of California, and for our nation. California has one of the highest rates of recidivism in the entire country. Meanwhile, our corrections budget has grown into the billions of dollars, leaving us with a revolving door that cycles criminals in and out of prison. Our current system is failing, and my aunt Kamala has implemented innovative initiatives that provide new and effective solutions to these massive problems. As she enters her seventh year as San Francisco's District Attorney, the "Smart on Crime" approach Kamala has pioneered continues to serve as a model for the nation to reform our criminal justice system.

Kamala's Back on Track initiative, for example, has achieved nationwide recognition for its successes in taking first-time, low-level, nonviolent drug offenders off the streets, giving them an education, job training and other important life skills, and re-entering them back into productive society. And her fight against school truancy provides hope to children who too often feel that our educational system does not care about them. She was the first female DA elected in San Francisco and is now running to become the first female and first African-American Attorney General in California history. I started this blog as a project of mine because so much ugly was going on around me. In order to stay sane, I needed to force myself to concentrate on what I love-God, my family, and the beauty that's all around me (I just heard Maurice White (Earth.Wind.Fire) in my ear). That being said, I never got into the blogger profiles, etc. that people fill out with a passion however, if I were to enter my favorite movie of all time, it would be courtesy of Motown, Lady Sings the Blues.

I was 11 years old when this movie came out in 1972, and even though there are movies that I enjoy and watch over and over, nobody can top Miss Ross as Lady Day. Her portrayal of the brilliant but tragic Billie Holiday still moves me to this day. My definition of unconditional love comes by way of Billy Dee Williams (I try not to think of Malt Liquor) as Louis McKay. He was so sexy. There was nothing and I mean nothing she could do that he didn't forgive (remember the Piano Man scene) and he loved her flaws and all. I know every single song from the soundtrack, and damn near every word of dialogue. Richard Pryor was wonderful, I mean the whole cast just stays with me to this day. Diana Ross was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category. She lost to Liza Minnelli (Cabaret I think), and I was outraged. This movie is a masterpiece.
